Why Are PDF Files So Large? (And How to Fix It)

You write a two-page document and somehow end up with a 15MB PDF. Where does all that weight come from? Understanding what bloats a PDF makes it easy to keep your files lean.

The usual suspects

Almost all PDF bloat traces back to a handful of causes:

How to slim a PDF down

The good news is that all of these are fixable in one step. The Compress tool downsamples oversized images to a sensible resolution, applies efficient compression, and strips redundant data — typically the single most effective thing you can do.

For scan-heavy files, you can go further: scanning future documents at 150 DPI rather than 600 produces dramatically smaller files from the start, with no visible difference on screen.

Match the file to its purpose

The right size depends on use. A document for on-screen reading or email can be compressed hard. One destined for high-quality printing should keep more image detail. Knowing the destination tells you how aggressive to be — and for most everyday sharing, smaller is almost always better.
