How to Unlock a Password-Protected PDF

Password-protected PDFs are great until you are the one typing the password every single time you open a file you already own. If you have the right to access a document and simply want to remove the lock for convenience, unlocking it takes moments.
A quick, important note on permission
Unlocking is for documents you are authorised to open — files you created, or files you received along with their password. It removes the password requirement from a PDF you can already unlock yourself. It is not a way to break into a file you do not have the password for, and no legitimate tool can recover content from properly encrypted PDFs without the key.
When removing the password is the sensible choice
- A report you reference daily and do not want to keep unlocking.
- An internal file whose password has become an obstacle now that it lives behind other access controls.
- A document you are about to merge or convert, where the password would interrupt the workflow.
How to unlock your PDF
- Open the Unlock PDF tool and upload the protected file.
- Enter the current password so the tool can decrypt it.
- Click Process and download a copy with the password removed.
Re-protecting when you need to
Removed a password but later need to lock the file again — perhaps with a stronger one? The Protect PDF tool re-encrypts the document with a fresh password in seconds.
